Undisclosed settlement on behalf of a man who was sexually abused at a Christian camp as a child. Peter Newman has been convicted of childhood sexual abuse and is now serving time in prison.
Jane Doe 929 v. Fr. Daniel O’Connell, St. Louis University, Jesuit Province of Missouri.
$200,000.00 settlement plus non-monetary commitments designed to prevent Fr. O’Connell from any further abuses. Jane Doe 929 was abused by Fr. O’Connell when she sought counseling from him when he was a professor at SLU in 1970. She repressed memory of the abuse until a newspaper article regarding Jane Doe MB ran in the New York Times.

Shawn Ratigan was a danger to children, allowing him to continue having contact with them even after the Diocese received a computer containing hundreds of images of obscene and pornographic pictures of parish girls.

CONFIDENTIAL settlement. Rebecca Randles successfully settled a claim against a former physical therapist for sexual abuse of a child in the 1980s. The settlement included both monetary and non-monetary terms.

Jane Doe MB v. Father Daniel O’Connell, Jesuit Province of Missouri
$82,000.00 settlement for breach of non-monetary commitments made in 2003. Only the second known lawsuit for violations of promises made as part of a settlement agreement, Rebecca Randles settled with the Jesuit Order because it allowed Fr. Daniel O’Connell to teach, speak at symposia and engage in public ministry after earlier settling with Jane Doe MB and promising as part of that settlement that he would have not be allowed to engage in any activity that could allow him to abuse any other students. Jane Doe MB was abused while traveling on a school sponsored trip to Rome with Fr. O’Connell in the 1980s.

Settlement of 32 Childhood Sexual Abuse Claims Against Diocese for Abuses from 1960’s-1980’s.
$9,950,000.00 Settlement on behalf of 32 men and women who were sexually abused by priests. Rebecca Randles was lead counsel on behalf of these individuals. Settlement occurred in the third week of trial of the Jon David Couzens v. Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph, et. al. Rebecca Randles and Pedro Irigonegaray tried that case, assisted by Sarah Brown and two paralegals, Daryl Daniel and Jeannie Johnson. Sasha Sanders, Senior Research Analyst and Investigator, acted as liaison and support for the witnesses and plaintiffs. The Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph reports spending over $7M on attorneys fees in these cases.

Three week trial, settled as the jury went to deliberations. Msgr. Thomas O’Brien sexually assaulted Jon David Couzens when he was an altar server for the priest in the 1980’s. Msgr. Thomas O’Brien had been the subject of as many as 30 reports of inappropriate sexual behavior with boys and young women prior to coming into contact with Jon David and at least four other altar boys who had been subjected to the same treatment.

$350,000.00 jury verdict for “fraud in the investigation” by the Church of claims that Rev. Stanley Archie engaged in inappropriate sexual misconduct with female counselees at the church. Rebecca Randles was lead legal counsel on the case. It was tried under a new and unique theory of law. Pedro Irigonegaray partnered with Ms. Randles to try the multiweek case.

is ordered to pay $350,000 in abuse investigation
Casey Walsh, et. al. v. Bishop Robert Finn and the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph.
Rebecca Randles was lead counsel in a multi week arbitration proceeding in which an Arbitrator awarded $1.1 Million dollars in damages and attorneys fees. As part of the 2008 $10M settlement against the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph for sexual abuse, the Diocese agreed to 19 child protection clauses to prevent future children from the abuse that the 47 plaintiffs experienced as children. An arbitrator found that the Diocese violated some of those contractual clauses when it failed to report Fr. Ratigan’s child pornography to authorities, it failed to train diocesan personnel on reporting procedures and other failures. This is the first known breach of contract action brought against a Diocese for failure to live up to contractual commitments made to victims.

Rebecca Randles has settled cases valuing in excess of $4,000,000.00 against the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph, Bishop Robert Finn and Fr. Shawn Ratigan.
These cases arose out of Fr. Shawn Ratigan’s using parish children as pornography models and taking obscene pictures of little girls. The Diocese and Bishop Finn were indicted and Bishop Finn convicted of failure to report suspicions of child abuse as a result of their actions following their finding of “hundreds and hundreds” of pictures of little girls – ranging from upskirt photographs taken under stairs, tables and elsewhere to up close photographs of naked little girls’ private areas – on Fr. Ratigan’s computer.

Rebecca Randles and Pedro Irigonegaray teamed up to begin trial on this unique case on behalf of Donald and Rosemary Teeman involving the suicide of their teenage son in 1983. The suit averred that Brian Teeman was being sexually abused by Msgr. Thomas O’Brien and committed suicide as a result. A witness to the abuse, Jon David Couzens, came forward in 2011. Prior to that time, the parents did not understand why their son took his life.
